"Introduction to Italy"

In recent years, Italy has turned to the U.S., as a means of increasing their exporting, after being recognized as the "second largest wine producer in the world." Italy was the first country to initiate wine laws to protect the names and origins of wines. Italy's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MIPAAF), has documented over 350 grapes and granted them "authorized" status. There are more than 500 other documented varieties in circulation as well. During this class, we will consider alternatives to Chianti, Pinot Grigio, and Moscato, as we explore other noble, and distinguished regions/varietals from Italy;

- The vinification/viticulture of each wine region (the wine making/wine growing), and the laws that pertain to them
- Identify the major wine producing regions of Italy
- Describe the climate and geography of those regions
- Identify significant DOC's/DOCG's and/or vineyards within these major areas
-  How to appropriately purchase Italian wine from a wine shop/Order Italian wine from a restaurant menu
- Articulate important Italian wine terms
- Matching Italian wines with foods
This course is taught in a classroom setting. You will receive a handout(s) containing subsequent information, maps, and additional pamphlets.
Cost $25.00/person
